Most of us want to live in a country with a dynamic and growing economy. In such a nation, vocational educators are aiming for a moving target. Nobody knows how to prepare a child for the future, but there are better and worse guesses. We have enough information to make reasonable predictions, and we can focus on broadly practical competencies that will likely have some relevance. We don’t have to commit to one plan and can adjust to the idea that frequent retraining and learning are required. If we don’t know whether nuclear fusion will pan out, it doesn’t mean spending hours teaching children about Henry VIII is any more worthwhile.
