Americans consume more of everything, including illegal and prescription drugs. 80% of global painkiller consumption takes place in the United States. Advertising exacerbates the consumption culture by accustoming Americans to the idea of “taking something”. Notably, illegal drugs are cheaper in the US than elsewhere, and teens have more disposable income. The relatively lesser sense of community removes a common disincentive from engaging in antisocial behaviour. As a higher-variance country with ethnic and cultural diversity, many more people will cluster into unproductive communities.
