The Tragedy of Rape

Few decisions are as consequential for women as mate selection, and rape negates this choice. The subsequent profound emotional damage is unsurprising, and along with the physical harm to the mother, a child born to a rapist will usually grow up fatherless. For those women that find partners, their stepchildren suffer rates of psychological abuse, physical abuse, and even murder many times greater than children growing up with their biological parents. The social stigma rape victims experience can drive them to suicide because we have evolved to recognise this stigma as a significant survival risk. Tragically women who suffer rape are punished in myriad ways, many times over for the crime of being victimised. Given all the harm in having people know of their rape, many women understandably hide it, which makes them suffer more heightened psychological distress. Law enforcement resources are insufficiently allocated to the problem because, with concealment, we do not know just how widespread it is.
