Self-Interest Voter Hypothesis

The self-interested voter hypothesis fails on consequential policy questions. A selfless, misguided public would be disastrous for democracy because the mistakes would please nobody. Fortunately, those who vote are less biased than those who don’t. Voters are less irrational when holding politicians accountable for the outcomes of their government: the politicians have to balance sating the counterproductive preferences while executing effective policy.
