Interviews

Many studies have concluded that interviews are an exercise in confirmation bias. An observing subject just 10 seconds into watching an interview could predict with 90% accuracy whether the interviewer would hire the candidate. The interview appears to serve to confirm the first impression. One effective way to overcome this is the implementation of hiring committees. Importantly these committees are never in communication with the candidate and serve to assimilate the feedback from groups who conducted interviews. The committee assess the first-hand data before making their decision. Importantly, they never formed a first-hand impression themselves. It is so different that it sounds ridiculous. But with Google using it and seeing success, it is worth taking seriously.

When interviewing candidates, remember a high success rate might create a survivorship bias. The candidates hired may be skilled, but how many superior candidates did you reject in the process?
