John Adams believed the war in 1775 was the consequence of a pre-existing battle raging in print and bars: a battle of ideas. In the 25 years prior, more than four hundred pamphlets discussed the rising tensions between Britain and the American Colonies. By the time of the war, the number of British_american newspapers had more than doubled to about fifty.
