We often hear of this fallacy in the form “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”. It is the misunderstanding that a lack of evidence proves a phenomenon does not exist. A vivid demonstration is the example of Russian roulette: surviving the first round is not proof that firing the gun will never kill you.
