In the West, we managed to replace violent honour culture with a dignity culture that favoured self-control. Self-indulgence is not inherently irrational - only when one too steeply discounts the future does it become a problem. Otherwise, it is sensible to factor in the uncertainties about what can happen between today and tomorrow. This accounting makes sense of interest in borrowing.
When choosing between two future rewards, a person doesn’t discount the future self as much. This “myopic discounting” results in hyperbolic discounting rather than rational exponential discounting.
