Common Knowledge and Outrage

“Common knowledge” - that which everyone knows that everybody else knows - can be generated by a focal point, such as a widely broadcast public occurrence. It could be common knowledge of this type that unites disparate people who share similar, gradually built vexations. The resultant communal outrage often inspires a victim narrative. The damage suffered is deemed irreparable and unforgivable. It is usually a poetic truth not entirely based in reality that allows the group to come together and mobilise. At its most benign, the outrage may motivate people to redress real harms with a little too much force. However, it can potentially empower demagogues and cause harmful changes to the fabric of society.
