Now, what matters more? The fact that I know these words and can make the requisite mouth noises to communicate them. Or, what I believe, and how those beliefs inform my actions.

If your opinion is that the former is meaningful, then there is too large a chasm between us. I do not intend to fill and obscure this value gap with niceties and willful ignorance.

Words do not have power in and of themselves because we do not live at Hogwarts or inhabit the world of J.R.R. Tolkein. They have as much impact as we allow them, and when regarded as inarticulable, we dive deeper into obscurantism.

A Nazi that says the “right” platitudes is still inordinately dangerous. A compassionate, tolerant, open-minded man that dares to utter the “wrong” things does not become so.

There is a puritanism, a totalitarian instinct, that motivates this impulse to censor and ignore intention. Recognise it within yourself because unaddressed, it is that compulsion that will prove genuinely harmful.
