Amara’s Law

Roy Amara said that we overestimate the impact of new technology in the short run but underestimate it in the long run. By the 1970s, the computer had become a bit of a joke in the 1970s. People appreciated its potential, and the hype after the Second World War was enormous, but the way it changed our world came as a massive surprise. The law similarly applied to the internet, in which people wrote off a novelty after the initial excitement. We may be seeing something similar in machine learning right now.
