There are nickel rich planets which naturally “mine” large quantities of the material. It is thought that the evolutionary advantage is that this renders the plants toxic to herbivores. It would have likely been a mutation of evolved behaviour of plants to “mine” large quantities of sodium which allows for my water consumption.
