The Illusion of Being Controlled

The illusion of control describes people’s overestimation of their ability to control events. I believe the opposite is more common; the illusion of being controlled. This latter illusion creates heightened sensitivity to perceived external causes of misfortune. It does not transfer to others; these same people believe the inadequacies in other people are their fault. Nor does it turn inwardly; it leaves little room for introspection and agency.
