The Einstellung Effect

Experience can be negative when it causes us to attempt to solve new problems in the same manner as we have solved old problems. This is called the Einstellung effect.
It has been most famously demonstrated in an experiment in which subjects were made to solve a series of water jar problems which required the same solution. The latter problems with which they were presented had simpler solutions, but the subjects took the same approach as they had learned with the earlier problems.
