In 2019 2.5% (1 in 40) of the new cars sold were electric while just over 0.5% (1 in 200) of the cars on the roads are electric.
At first this struck me as quite disappointing - it seems like it would take forever for “plug-in passenger” cars to replace the traditional fuel based vehicles. However, considering that the proportion of cars bought being electric is increasing, and that the best type of progress is slow and steady, I’m quite optimistic. We might be looking at an almost entirely electric car future in the 2040s!
