Few people would argue a life is without any value, that it is insignificant and could be discarded at a whim. Nor though would any sensible person be able to say with a straight face that a single life is of infinite value - that no matter the cost we will dedicate all of the world’s resources to saving one human being. We must then be prepared to put a number on it, and in accepting this we can move forward in calculating what measures are or are not worthwhile.
