A Redesigned Role for Managers

Counter intuitively a manager should not have power over who to hire, who to fire, or the salary of employees, at least not without conversation with others. We should understand the role of a manager as helping their team. This removes the status and power of the job but monopolises the use of oversight and guidance. Shifting the incentives in this way also selects for the type of people we should want in management roles; those who are invested in the welfare and productivity of their team, not a person who desires power and the ability to treat employees as automatons - a means to a utilitarian end.
