Meditations and Learnings

Matthew Effect

Coined by Robert K. Merton this term describes how eminent scientists will often get more credit than a comparatively lesser known researcher despite their work being similar, and even if the unknown researcher’s work is better. A commonly seen example is the misattribution of quotes to plausible, well-known speakers who may have said it while quoting somebody else, or might not have ever said it at all.
