The Helmholtz Club

The Helmholtz Club was a monthly meeting at UC Irvine for key members from various backgrounds to discuss the mystery of consciousness. It was kept secret because of the inclusion of Francis Crick. They debated explanations for conscious experience and propositional behaviour. Francis Crick posited what he referred to as “The Amazing Hypothesis” which is a mechanistic explanation for consciousness resemblant of the understanding held by many neuroscientists. Effectively it understands that deepened understanding of the neuro-correlates of consciousness will eventually constitute an explanation of the phenomenon (or epiphenomenon). It completely ignores the qualitative aspect of consciousness and is therefore inherently insufficient.
