Meditations and Learnings

Affect Heuristic

This is a mental shortcut wherein a difficult question is replaced with an easier question based on emotion. For example, if somebody is asked whether they support a prime-ministerial candidate this question can be replaced, often subconsciously, with whether they like said candidate. The insidious thing is that the subject does not even realise the substitution has taken place in their brain. Studies have shown that we are far more likely to believe something is true if we like it.
