This is an international index rating 160 countries on their performance in 5 categories:
- religious freedom (how free is the population to practice, or not, their religion)
- bioethical freedom (how free is an individual to decide on matters of a bioethical nature)
- drugs freedom (how free is the production, trade, and consumption of ‘harmful’ substances)
- sexual freedom (how free are sexual intercourse, pornography, and sex services amongst consenting adults)
- family and gender freedom (how free are women, LGBT individuals, and unmarried couples living together)
Each category accounts for 20 points, and therefore 20%, of the final score.
Performance is rated as:
- 90-100 points – Highest moral freedom
- 80-90 points – Very high moral freedom
- 60-80 points – High moral freedom
- 50-60 points – Acceptable moral freedom
- 40-50 points – Insufficient moral freedom
- 20-40 points – Low moral freedom
- 10-20 points – Very low moral freedom
- 0-10 points – Lowest moral freedom
In 2018 the 20 lowest countries were all predominately Islamic with the exception of Sri Lanka at position 144 (out of 160).
