There is a misguided belief that a single taste of heroin will almost inevitably result in an addiction because its chemistry is such that it causes this reliance, but that simply isn’t the case. Testifying to the mere partial role its chemically addictive nature has in chronic use are the many US soldiers who acquired an addiction to heroin while fighting in Vietnam. The vast majority of these people easily gave it up when they returned home and in follow up reports very few regained the habit while most of those who did had a history with drug abuse.
