Taking Seriously the Problem of Perception

Over-confidence in our perception, or even our capacity to accurately perceive, results in a misunderstanding of reality. The example that Daniel Schmachtenberger uses it that of a cylinder as perceived by a couple of 2-dimensional beings. One sees a circle, the other a rectangle, and these different viewpoints actaully harm their chances of comprehending true reality rather than help. They cannot be reconciled because their perception lacks an entire dimensionality. Perhaps they would try to form an image which encorporated both, but they would probably end up with something like a rounded rectangle which is only further from the truth.
