Logos in Stoicism

The universal order was understood to be represented by the logos. The logos infuses and is welded by our hegemonikon (“that which guides”), which is the intellective part of our consciousness. A primary function is the processing and assessing of the data received from our senses.
The mental impressions made by the world around us are referred to as phantasia which generate a perception (hypolepsis) like a negative print of a photograph, and like a photograph the print need not be accurate or faithful to the reality, with shadow images or distortions. Inappropriate value judgements fall under the category of distortions, such as dichotomous thinking (“good” or “evil”).

  • Perception
    • Absolute objectivity of thought (seeing things dispassionately for what they are)
  • Action
    • Humans share in the logos unlike animals, and can be considered participants in this logos which is as much a process as a substance. Humans live as nature requires which doesn’t require passive acquiescence but active cooperation.
  • Will
    • Understanding that one need not be harmed by those things outside of their control.
