Altruism in which the attempts to promote the welfare of others instead result in unanticipated harm. This includes acts of altruism which significantly hurt the altruist, or where the actions result in more harm than good. Examples can range from burnout in healthcare professionals to excessive donation of organs. It has even been stated that suicide bombings are a form of pathological altruism in that the perpetrators believe they are acting altruistically for those who share their ideology.
