A Different Answer to the Fermi Paradox

In his 2006 article for Edge, Geoffrey Miller offered another answer to the Fermi Paradox; perhaps the ability of societies to develop virtual worlds grows so great that the real world proves to pale in comparison.
Space exploration is thought to simply not compare to the unimaginable phenomenology possible via advanced technology. At first this theory struck me as silly catastrophisation, but as he elaborated on it I was left somewhat persuaded of its explanatory power.
