Psychedelics also appears to suppress the default mode network in the brain and it is this network connects the prefrontal cortex to the posterior singular cortex, to deeper and older centres of emotion and memory. It has been implicated in self-reflection, theory of mind, mental time travel, and the autobiographical memory; effectively the parts of the brain responsible for the illusion of the self. With this orchestrator taken out of the picture the other networks it usually regulates can now communicate within the brain and rise up.
