Being able to end a friendship sustains cooperation because free riders would otherwise cause a group to collapse. Most people when they see a group member not working will defect rather than happily pick up the slack, and this inevitably results in a poorer outcome. Far better to dismiss a person from the group or severe a one-sided relationship and preserve the end goal.
