When a resource is shared those that benefit from said resource may independently use it in a self-interested manner. When this behaviour runs contrary to the common good of all users the resource will be depleted or spoiled.
The concept was originated by William Foster Lloyd in 1833, and the phrase “Tragedy of the Commons” was coined over a century later by Garrett Hardin in 1966.
