Is-Ought Problem

David Hume stated that many writers make claims about what ought to be, based on statements about what is. He pointed out the significant difference between positive statements (what is) and descriptive statements (what ought to be).

The reason the topic arises in debates about theology is because this is-ought distinction threatens the validity of secular ethics, seemingly rendering secular ethical systems subjective and arbitrary.
