Fitness Landscapes

Thomas Sewall, 1932

Fitness landscapes are used to visualise the relationship between genotypes and reproductive success. In such visualisation the fitness is the height of the landscape and similar genotypes are said to be “close” to each other where different genotypes are “far” from each other. It is the set of all possible genotypes, their degree of similarity, and their related fitness values which make up a fitness landscape. Thomas Sewall was the first to introduce visualising the distribution of fitness as a means of studying evolution.
