Refeeds and diet breaks both fall under the category of intermittent dieting.
Refeeds refer to a 24-48 hour period of a higher caloric intake, predominately from carbohydrates, usually at or slightly above maintenance. A diet break is a longer period, typically 7+ days, and should be used less frequently.
If psychological alleviation is adequate for the diet intervention the refeed is ideal because it will have nil to minimal impact on the weight loss and can allow for a renewed state of mind when returning to a caloric deficit.
If a physiological impact is required the diet break is the tool for the job. The current, albeit limited, scientific literature shows that it effects hormones (increase in leptin and a decrease in ghrelin) which would have a positive impact on hunger levels. There is also evidence which suggests that caloric expenditure can be increased with a well implemented diet break.
