Sexual selection has been a matter of disagreement in evolutionary biology. Taking the peacock tail as an example, Charles Darwin believed that the aesthetics alone justified the female preference whereas Alfred Wallace disagreed, believing that it must serve as a signal, either of health or perhaps as a “costly” signal.
